The government accuses Aznar and Feijóo of "Trumpism" for questioning the election results.

The government accuses Aznar and Feijóo of "Trumpism" for questioning the election results.

Every time things get tough for Pedro Sánchez, any reprimand from José María Aznar, especially if Alberto Núñez Feijóo echoes it, serves to revive the Prime Minister and force the PSOE to re-establish its strong position. This is what has happened again now, when, in the midst of the storm over the alleged corruption scandals gripping the Socialists, Aznar has questioned the results of the last general elections to try to delegitimize the government once again. This criticism has also been endorsed by the leader of the Popular Party.

Government spokesperson Pilar Alegría warned that she sees these accusations by Aznar and Feijóo as "a strategy to sow doubt about the elections." "And this is very serious; this is called Trumpism," she warned. "This is not accepting democracy in your country, it is not accepting the election results, it is not accepting the democratic rules by which we all abide," she denounced.

It's the same strategy of "sowing doubt" about the election results that Alegría has asserted the PP has been pursuing since Sánchez took office, in order to "delegitimize" the government.

"The most shocking aspect of this strategy is that its ideologue is precisely a former president who attempted to rig an election through the most wretched lie in the history of our democracy," the government spokesperson emphasized, referring to Aznar's attempt to blame ETA for the Islamist attacks of March 11th ahead of the 2004 general elections.

And Alegría has also accused the PP of participating in this strategy to question the election results, despite a court ruling that has proven that he "participated in some electoral processes under the influence of drugs."

Those in the Moncloa Palace admit that any admonition from Aznar was always beneficial to the government and served to unite the PSOE ranks. But they maintain that this type of criticism causes enormous damage and puts democracy "in jeopardy" by questioning its rules. Therefore, they don't believe Aznar's words will benefit the government in any way on this occasion. "It's irresponsible," they lament.
